Steam traps — how they work and why they matter
In every steam system, steam releases heat and turns into water — condensate. If this condensate is not removed quickly, it reduces heat-transfer efficiency, causes corrosion and can lead to water hammer that damages pipes and equipment.
A steam trap automatically discharges condensate and non-condensable gases while preventing the loss of live steam. This keeps the system efficient, protects equipment and delivers significant energy savings through heat recovery.
The most common types by operating principle:
- Mechanical (float or inverted bucket) — respond to condensate level.
- Thermostatic — respond to the temperature difference between condensate and steam.
- Thermodynamic — use the difference in velocity and pressure of steam and condensate.
Beyond traps, complete solutions include valves, regulators, condensate pumps, heat-recovery systems, drying of air and gases, and diagnostics and management of steam networks.
Fire-fighting foams — types and use
Fire-fighting foam is created by mixing foam concentrate, water and air. The foam forms a blanket that extinguishes fire by smothering the flame (cutting off oxygen), cooling the surface and preventing re-ignition by suppressing flammable vapors. It is especially effective on flammable-liquid fires (Class B).
Main types:
- Protein and fluoroprotein — traditional, with a stable and resilient foam blanket.
- Synthetic — spread quickly and suit a wide range of applications.
- Fluorine-free (F3) — modern, environmentally friendly formulations without PFAS compounds, increasingly replacing classic fluorinated foams due to environmental and health impact.
Applications include industry and petrochemicals, aviation and the marine sector, as well as wildfire and industrial fire suppression. Alongside the products we provide consulting and selection of the optimal foam for the specific risk.
